The problem: you've got so many thumbnails that whichever way you try to fit them into the page the user always has to scroll down the page to click a thumbnail, then scroll back up to see the enlarged image. This inconveniences the user and ultimately could contribute to turning them off a purchase.
The solution: Overflow Panes!
In Product Attribute Pictures, overflow panes are used to contain thumbnails belonging to one or more picture sets. They can be configured so that either each picture set gets it's own individual overflow pane, or one overflow pane will contain all picture sets if there are more than one. The picture sets themselves will still be displayed using the pre-configured set settings (i.e. thumbnail width, number of thumbnails per row etc), but will be contained within an overflow pane whose dimensions can be adjusted as required in PAPs admin on a per-product basis. Thumbnails appearing beyond these dimensions can easily be scrolled into view without having to scroll the entire page.
For a typical example of overflow panes in action, see the Product Attribute Pictures Overflow Pane Demo.
Apart from saving space in your product page, overflow panes also bring other display layout possibilities. For example, as an alternative to using large popups which load separately you could make the thumbnails themselves as large as possible and house them in one row or column within an overflow pane. This way, your users will have access to preloaded popup-sized images which can be scrolled as required. For an example of this take a look at the Product Attribute Large Overflow Pane Demo .
